Show moreNewspaper: Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper with illustrations of Barnum's Roman Hippodrome The illustration features three images at the top, and a central image that takes up the rest of the page. On top, from left to right, are the Congress of Nations which features chariots and flags of different countries; the exterior of Barnum's Roman Hippodrome featuring flags flying overhead; and the menagerie of the hippodrome with elephants and giraffes on the left side of the image and camels on the right. The central image shows the oval track of the hippodrome with chariot races taking place on the track and elephants in the center of the track. Everywhere there are packed seats. On April 30, 1874, Barnum opened the New York Hippodrome which also featured circus acts. The Hippodrome would go on to have both a permanent home in New York City and have a traveling component.
