The Hadsell family reunion was held each summer at various places, usually in August, and Clinton was the secretary of the event. White Oak Park in New Britain was a resort on 45 acres, with a lake, dancing, refreshments, pavilions, flying horses, swings, and more. Jane Hadsell, the mother of Clinton and Frank, is possibly the woman in the middle row, fourth from left (based on the curator’s familiarity with Jane’s appearance, from one other photograph). White Oak was also the location of the August 14, 1895 Hadsell reunion. Frank Hadsell wrote that the 1905, the “Hadsell picnic was held at [Lake] Compounce this day and [my sister] Ida said she supposed Mother was there and wished she could get away to enjoy some of the fine weather.” Frank Hadsell wrote about the 1912 reunion that “There was quite a large number at the Hadsell picnic at [Lake] Compounce this month, and Clinton, who had brought his camera, took a picture of us all. Of course I went with Mother. Eva and Will were there, Nettie Hadsell, Owen, Annie Hadsell Hoyting, and I think a Charles Hadsell from Westfield….” Clinton Hadsell’s original title for photograph #085 was “Hadsell Family.” Original title in CBH’s list and on his paper sleeve for photograph #085: “Hadsell Family, Aug. 15, 1900.” Source: Frank Hadsell Diary for picnic - August 1905, p. 93; the 1912 picnic in Volume 22, p. 116, has a note on those in attendance, from the diary of Lucy Hadsell of Burlington, CT, in the collection of the Burlington Library.
