Show moreThere was a New England Lime Company in North Canaan, Ct. A postcard dated 1916 or earlier is on the internet. There are over a dozen marble quarries in North Canaan, mostly now abandoned, with several surrounding the village of Canaan. But only a few quarries in the town of Canaan. Old references typically refer to minerals occurring in the marble quarries at or near Canaan, which from the context means the village because they will also reference marble quarries in Falls Village, the principal village in the town of Canaan. Marble quarries (abandoned) are located north, northeast and south of Rattlesnake Hill, the largest on the south side and formerly operated by New England Lime. Nothing specific is written about their mineralogy. By far most specimens from "Canaan" are from the old, largest and still active quarry, Specialty Minerals (aka Pfizer or New England Lime Co.) 1 mile southeast of the village, but some references imply other quarries as the source of mineral occurrences.
