The Avon Newsletter February 1946


Not really a newsletter, but more of a letter (2 pages) to still update those that are away from Avon. -- The majority of those that left are still not home yet even though the war is over.


Randall Bentley was a gunner’s mate 3/c on a submarine.


David Stuart was a corporal.


Joseph Alsop and Stewart Alsop were writing a Washington column for the New York Herald Tribune and a number of other newspapers.


Morton H. Dawson, Jr. was promoted to Staff Sgt. in the AAFTRC at Fort Worth, Texas and had been discharged.


Arthur Neriani was now on terminal leave after being promoted from 1st Lieutenant to Captain.


Albert Rubenstahl, stationed in Tokyo, had been promoted to Sergeant.


John O’Neill’s school buses are the first in Connecticut to be equipped with new electrically operated machines which spread granite in front of the rear tires to prevent skidding.


Mrs. Philip Hewes had succeeded Mrs. Andrew Sexton as Chairman of Home Service for the Red Cross. - Handled problems involving servicemen and/or their families. -- St. Ann’s Parish collected 2,456 pounds of canned foods to be sent to Europe and the Philippines. -- Old clothes drive handled by the Avon Fire Department. - Over 1 ton of clothing collected.


The Infantile Paralysis Drive raised $600.


William A. Jameson, Jr., the Avon Newsletter’s reporter at Old Farms Convalescent Hospital, was promoted from 1st Lieutenant to Captain in the Medical Corps.


The Old Farms Convalescent Hospital raised more money for the pool so the plant could be updated. During the day it is used for athletic activities of the Training Department. In the evening, military personnel of the post and their guests use it for their benefit.


The local VFW post had been named the Gildo T. Consolini Post in honor of the first Avon boy killed in action. -- 75 members - Plans for a women’s auxiliary Gathers in Town Hall on Monday evenings -- Returning veterans were encouraged to join.
