Signed H.W. Ranger at lower left. Henry Ward Ranger was a founder of the Lyme Art Colony (1899), which was based at the boardinghouse of Florence Griswold in Old Lyme. He invented the term Tonalist to describe the atmospheric style that characterizes his landscapes.
