Artist John Ferguson Weir was a painter and writer, and brother of artist J. Alden Weir. The natural feature depicted in this panoramic painting, along with its companion West Rock, had been a landmark for American landscape painters since the early nineteenth century. Weir omits the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument which was erected in 1884. Gift of The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company
