Show moreAn account allowed by the Committee of Safety for the town Simsbury to John Viets, Keeper of Newgate Prison, in said town, and others, for provisions and other necessary articles of expense to support the prisoners now in said prison, sent from the Continental Army at Roxbury by order of his Excellency Genl. Washington. Provisions were provided to John Short from December 31, 1775 to January 3, 1776 when he died trying to escape from prison. Owen Ruick was given an allowance for provisions and for someone tending him during his sickness. John Smith was also sick and lame and was given an allowance for provisions, a surgeon, and spirits to dress his wounds. Nathaniel Winchel was paid for tending John Smith and he and other residents of Simsbury were paid for keeping guard over the prisoners. Each account was attested to by Justice of Peace Asahel Holcomb, and the entire set of accounts were then confirmed by Elisha Barber, clerk of the Committee of Safety. Show less
