This was the last view taken before landing, from a height of 2,600 feet, and shows objects several miles distant with great clearness. The Connecticut river is seen passing across the center of the view, and winding through the middle distance, the Farmington, flowing to its union with the Connecticut. Observe the many reflections in the smooth water surfaces, even from the further bank of the Connecticut, six miles away. The foreground shows an extent of several miles of woods, on which our landing was made. The effect of a hazy atmosphere in gradually cutting off the view of the earth, is well shown in the view across the river. The mouth of the Scantic river is seen at the left of the center of the view, across the Connecticut river. The long village of South Windsor is seen at the right of the view in the distance. / These are the first and only successful views ever taken from a balloon. Show less
