Drawing by Elbert Weinberg probably representing the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, when, according to the Christian Bible, the Angel Gabriel informs Mary that she will become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. The figure of the Angel Gabriel, at the left, looms over the seated figure of Mary, at the right. Although the drawing may also represent the related subject of Sarah and the Angel, Weinberg exhibited at least one sculpture with the title Annunciation in the early 1950s. The angel is very similar to the angel in a 1952 sculpture with this title, but in the sculpture the woman is standing, not seated. The drawing may represent a preliminary scheme that was not executed or may relate to a different sculpture.
