Drawing by Elbert Weinberg depicting a large fountain. Dancing figures, one of them possibly with wings, occupy an elevated circular basin on a high base. Water cascades down the sides of the basin. One small figure, standing beside the fountain, provides a sense of scale. Brick pathways form patterns in the surrounding pavement. Trees are in the background. The drawing is inscribed “BRICK / PATTERNED” “WATER / ISOLATED / NO DANGER / TO CHILDREN / FROM ACCESSIBLE / BASIN” “3 SEATING RINGS” “CONCRETE” “BRICK” “CONCRETE / CONSTINS BRONZE LETTERING” “FOR THE PEOPLE PAST AND PRE / RIT – THE ART SPIRIT – THE / THE HARTFORD SPIRIT – THE HART / UNITED TECHNOLOGIES – AETNA - / TRAVELR’S [sic] – HARTFORD STEA” Part of the inscription is cut off on either side of the sheet. The drawing is for one of the public art projects that Weinberg proposed for the city of Hartford, Connecticut during the mid- to late 1980s. A slide of a wax model for the sculptures is dated “DEC86” and the model and drawing were probably made about that time. The drawing could also be somewhat later.

Sculptor Elbert Weinberg (1928-1991) was a Hartford native and Weaver High School graduate who maintained a studio in the Colt Building for many years. He worked in various mediums, including marble, bronze, and other metals. Twice awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, Weinberg created sculptures that grace museums, public installations, and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.
