View of two vessels under way. Printed caption at the top reads: "Yachting in New London, M. F. Plant's fast Boats". One of the vessels, seen in port view, is a large two-masted boat with a smokestack, possibly Plant's yacht, Iolanda. Several lifeboats can be seen above the deck. Visible in an oval inset in the upper left corner is a sailboat under way, seen in starboard bow view. Handwritten on the reverse: "Have been in town since 8 o'clock. Have now three hours before boat time. Have bo't a carpet also a couch hammock for you to sleep on next month. Sorry you are not here. A. J.[?] R. Addressed to Mrs. F. H.[?] Cooper, Andover, Conn.

Title supplied by cataloger. Postmarked New London, May 15, 10 AM, 1913 or 1918. One-cent stamp. Morton Plant, successful railroad, steamship and hotel businessman had an estate at Avery Point. It was turned over to the state in the 1930's. The Coast Guard used it for training during World War II. In 1969 it became the Southeastern Campus of the University of Connecticut (later renamed University of Connecticut at Avery Point). The auxiliary yacht Iolanda was built in Leith, Scotland in 1908.
