Show moreFrank had started taking photographs about 1889, so perhaps Frank had inspired Clinton. Among the items in the Hadsell Collection is Clinton’s 1891 copy of The Photographic Times and American Photographer. This volume is a collection of journals from 1890-1893, with articles about “Art, Science, and the Advancement of Photography” and photographs by experts. The Hadsell collection also has a scrapbook that Clinton apparently compiled, dating from the early 1880s when he was about 11-13 years old. It is jammed with newspaper drawings and clippings about pretty girls, people and places, animals, and buildings. The scrapbook shows young Clinton’s keen interest in design, his drive to collect images, and even his desire to have beautiful illustrations at hand. In Clinton’s financial account books, he first recorded a purchase of photography equipment in April 1899. Five months later, in September, he paid $23 for a camera. To put that $23 in perspective, it helps to know he was paying his mother $3.50 - $4.50 a week for board. His income that month was $34.75 ($25.25 at Climax Fuse for four weeks work; and $22.70 from the News Office). That $23 camera cost him about one month’s wages at Climax Fuse Company.
