Description
Alan Thacker Busby was the first African-American to graduate from the Connecticut Agricultural College. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he enrolled at CAC in 1914; he was an honor student, a member of the staff for the campus newspaper, in the ROTC program, and a member of the football team. Two days after Busby graduated from CAC, in May 1918, he joined the Army’s all-black Field Artillery unit during World War I, which stayed in France months after the war ended. When he came home he taught Animal Husbandry at various colleges, retiring in 1966. Shown here is Busby at age 95 when he returned to the University of Connecticut campus to serve as the Grand Marshall of the 1990 Homecoming Parade. He stands next to UConn President Harry Hartley. Alan Busby died in 1992.
