Front view of a 1972 bronze fountain by Elbert Weinberg representing the nymph Arethusa. In Greek mythology, Arethusa was transformed into a fountain by the goddess Artemis in order to enable her to escape the attentions of the river god Alpheus. In the sculpture, Arethusa is portrayed as a nude woman with gaping holes in her body, perhaps to indicate that she is undergoing the process of transformation. The figure is seven and a half feet high without its basin. The photograph, which was presumably taken in the early 1990s, shows the statue in a storeroom. The edge of one of the photographer’s lights is visible at lower right.

Sculptor Elbert Weinberg (1928-1991) was a Hartford native and Weaver High School graduate who maintained a studio in the Colt Building for many years. He worked in various mediums, including marble, bronze, and other metals. Twice awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, Weinberg created sculptures that grace museums, public installations, and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.
