Wharf scene, New Bedford, Massachusetts, August 19, 1896. At left is the Mystic-built whaling bark George and Mary, seen in port stern view, shortly before being burned. Effigies of men hang from her rigging. Spectators stand on the wharf on which a sign reading "PUBLIC/LANDING" can be seen. At right is the stern of the sidewheel steamer City of Lawrence; she is flying flags. At far left is the sloop Estella. At left background is New Bedford Cordage.
