Voter Registration Art Project

This collection includes voter registration cards selected to support creation of a sculpture by master artist Marilyn Thrall that will be a permanent feature in the Hartford History Center at Hartford Public Library. The artwork will give voice to the many Hartford women who, despite barriers, registered to vote prior to and during October 1920. Through Hartford’s Voter Registration Records, we are introduced to a diverse contingent of civic-minded women - whether single, married or widowed; Jewish or Christian; black or white; housewives, stenographers, undertakers; native born or foreign-born - who took advantage of this long-fought opportunity to register to vote. This selected group of cards is a subset of the thousands of 1920 and pre-1920 registration records for Hartford women voters that are part of the Hartford History Center’s Hartford Voter Registration Records collection.
