Description
Letter to Julian Sterling from P.T. Barnum, December 31, 1889 Some weeks ago got a friendly letter from Sterling" but considering the wrongs you attempted to do me through the New York World I concluded it was best to file it away without replying. But now, on this closing day of the year, in addition to the fact that I harbour no ill will against any person, that it is best to forget past wrongs and tell you that this is the case regarding yourself. You have considerable talent, can shine in the literary world, but unfortunately, your wish to write sensational stuff for the newspapers does great injury to others. Many a lady and gentleman in Bridgeport have smarted under your ungenerous attacks and insinuations. More in sorrow than in anger. Twice in last year you have made the NY World liable for heavy damages in consequence of false statements regarding P.T.. First, because I had no authority to lead our show flags to a Committee of the Fair of which you were a member, but referred you to my partner, Mr. Bailey, you published in the World untruly that I had retired from the show business. If this had not been promptly contradicted, it would have injured business hundreds of thousands of dollars. 2nd, you wrote asking me to give you personal items which you might publish in the World in answer to which I told you to publish nothing without first showing him the manuscript. You then untruthfully published in the World a second time that he had retired. The Seaside Club of Bridgeport, of which I am a member, refused to receive you as a body and would have blackballed you had your name been submitted. Many families in Bridgeport won't receive you." P.T. Barnum wrote a large number of letters in his time, and as a public figure, received many in return. These manuscripts offer insight into his personal life via correspondence with friends and family, his business interests including the American Museum and the circus, and his personality. The various correspondents demonstrate how vast his social circle was, and the space he occupied as a public figure during his own lifetime.
