This issue of Contact from December, 1975 features an interview with writer and artist Nikki Giovonni, an article about the increased academic dismissal rate of black students at UConn, as well as a commentary on the aims of Contac as a whole. Also included are photographs from plays, dance performances, and concerts at UConn; poetry by Mark Lutian, Lois Coleman, Melvin Daniels, Jerry Wade, and Julio Jordan; and a piece of short fiction by Wayne Shorter. In addition, there is an account of a poetry reading given by Lois Coleman, Bessy Reyna, and Fatima Cortez el Mohammed. This issue also contains reviews of the films “Coonskin” and “Let’s Do It Again,” an account of U.N. Day on campus, and an editorial by Nathaniel Bracey. Concerning international news, there is an article on Canada’s economic influence in the Caribbean, as well as a piece about the invitation from the U.N. Security Council to the Palestine Liberation Organization to debate Israeli air raids in Lebanon. Furthermore, there is an article by Professor Ivan Van Sertima discussing the possibility of Africans arriving in Central America pre-Columbus, a piece on the issues of identity among Cape Verdeans in the U.S, and information about the “Fight-Back” conference co-sponsored by the Southern Conference Education Fund.
