Description
Blank check for the Bridgeport Bank, dating from 1849. Cream color paper with black ink. On the left hand side of the check is the name "Phineas T. Barnum" and in the upper center of the check is a drawing of Barnum's first Bridgeport mansion, Iranistan. The Bridgeport Bank was one of the earliest banks in the state of Connecticut, and was established in 1806 . Just as contemporary checks allow for featured graphics, checks issued during this period did as well. This one features Barnum's home, Iranistan. Iranistan was P.T. Barnum's family home from 1848-1857 in Bridgeport, CT located on present day Fairfield Avenue. It was designed in the Moorish revival style by Leopold Eidlitz, with additional inspiration from the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. It cost $100,000 and sat on seventeen acres of land. The mansion burned down in December of 1857, due to the burning ashes of a workman's cigar or pipe.
