Description
Granite slab topped with carving of a palm leaf and other carved plant motifs. Beneath these is a medallion portrait of Sedgewick with the Legend "John Sedgwick, Major General, U.S., Army". A lengthy dedicatory inscription is below the medallion. A stone with a mounted cannon and a bronze eagle attached stands in front of the slab. The four corners of the supporting platform each have a pyramid of stacked cannonballs.Sedgwick, a Cornwall native, was commander of the 6th Corps of the Army of the Potomac and died from a sniper's bullet at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse in 1864 (not 1861 as the photograph verso claims).
