Description
New Haven Railroad's Comet train leaves the Providence, Rhode Island, station bound for Boston, Massachusetts. The skyscraper in the center background is the Industrial Trust Building, the tallest building in Rhode Island, now nicknamed the 'Superman Building' for a supposed resemblance to the offices of the Daily Planet. Providence Union Station is in the background right of center. The photographer was on the Smith Street bridge over the New Haven Railroad near the RI State Capitol. The photograph is undated but could not have been taken before April 1935, when the Comet was delivered to the New Haven Railroad from the Goodyear - Zeppelin Corporation in Akron, Ohio. The Comet was a streamlined lightweight articulated train that initially ran between Providence and Boston on a "44 miles in 44 minutes" schedule.
