Description
View of the west side of Church Street between George and Crown Streets, New Haven, prior to redevelopment. View appears to be from the east side of Church looking northwest. Commercial buildings and storefronts can be seen. Businesses occupying a one-story building to the left include Nankin's (advertising window shades, Venetian blinds and women's and children's clothing) and James Brown [and] Son Paint and Wallpaper. Adjoining five- and four-story buildings can be seen farther up the street to the right. The five-story building has dormers; fire escapes are visible from the roof level to the second floor. A sign painted on the south side of the hotel reads in part: "JOHN LEARY'S/BILLIARD/ROOM/IMPORTED and DOMESTIC/ALES". "LEWIS OSTERWEIS & SONS" is carved above the fourth-floor cornice of the adjoining building to the north. Signs for Enson's Men's Wear and Loring Photographer can be seen above the storefronts, which appear to be empty. The First New Haven National Bank building is partially visible at far right.
