Description
Program for Dan Rice's Paris Pavilion Circus playing in New York on September 25, 1871. This program is for the Paris Pavilion Circus, owned by Dan Rice. The two page program for a show in New York on September 25, 1871, shows a header with trick horses on either side and a portrait of Rice in the middle of the words Paris Pavilion and Programme. The program itself lists the order of events on the front, and offers a summary of the wonders of the Paris Pavilion Circus on the back. Advertisements for local businesses make up the rest of the program. Dan Rice (January 23, 1823-February 22, 1900) was a competitor of P.T. Barnum's, having been in the circus business well before Barnum entered it in 1871. Rice introduced acrobats, clowns, and animals into the circus, and he was one of the most famous showmen of the era. He also ran for various political offices in his lifetime, including President of the United States, although Rice dropped out of the race.
