Description
This special issue of Contac from January, 1974 features articles on African culture, ideologies, and liberation. It includes an article on the importance of unity among African nations, a report of the Anti-Imperialist Conference held the previous October, and a call for the release of Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners by Bantustan leader Colins Ramusi. The issue also includes an article celebrating the new independence of the State of Guinea Bissau, including excerpts from its Proclamation of Independence. There is a profile of political prisoner Walter Sisulu, Secretary General of the African National Congress, and information about the call from sixteen African countries for sanctions against the United States & Britain (among others) for backing white minority governments in southern Africa. In addition, the issue contains pictures of sculptures from different African countries currently on display at the William Benton Museum of Art, an article about Yoruba names and the naming ceremony in Yorubaland, as well as a piece on Toivo Ja Tovio, an activist imprisoned while fighting for Namibian independence. There is also an announcement of the marriage of Ada Rachel Hamilton & Rogers Gooding Barlatt (both international students from Sierra Leone) at the Storrs Congregational Church.
