Description
Tree stump and partially raised moss-covered rock in foreground. Slight rocky slope leads up to low cave entrance partially hidden by trees. In vol. 6, no. 2 (December 1940) of The Lure of the Litchfield Hills, Mills relates the story of Pahke, Chief Qussuk's sixteen-year-old daughter, who saved her people from wolves and starvation one winter by leading them to this cave. In the same issue he writes about Orrin and Mercy Wright who raised a family of ten in this cave between the years of 1839 and 1854. This photograph was used to illustrate the Wright story and also an additional article on the Wright children, which appeared in vol. 6, no. 4 (winter 1941-42). Pahke and her people were probably members of the Agawam tribe. This cave is sometimes referred to as the Wright cave.
