Description
This 3/4-channel or "plain" gouge dates from the Middle to late Archaic period (ca. 8000 - 3500 BP). Hard stones, usually basalt, were carefully pecked to shape and then ground, often to a high polish. Such tools were firmly hafted to a handle and most likely used for the manufacture of dugout canoes, and for similar woodworking tasks. The artifact was found in Hartford County, Connecticut.
