Description
Side view of wooden bridge on stone abutments over shallow, rocky, river bed. This 80-foot covered bridge with an open enclosed 30-foot approach span was jointly erected by the towns of Colchester and Chatham (now East Hampton) in 1873. Closed to vehicular traffic in 1932, it was rebuilt and restored by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937-38 and is now (2003) part of a public park adjacent to Route 16 in East Hampton.Typewritten note attached to back of photo identifies location of bridge as Colchester.
