Description
Log cabin with windows and a stone chimney at the foot of a hill. The glass panes in the windows are broken and the windows have been covered with wire mesh. Park visitors have carved their initials and other messages on the logs. Putnam Memorial State Park is the site of Connecticut's Valley Forge. In the harsh winter of 1778-79, Major General Israel Putnam and his troops camped here in order to be able to march to the defense of West Point or the towns on Long Island Sound. Although a penciled inscription on the back of this photograph gives the location as being “on the site of the old Guard House used by General Putnam in the winter of 1778,” a phone call to the Park Supervisor revealed that this log cabin was actually located north of the fireback remains and was a reproduction of the soldiers' barracks. It burned down in the mid-1970s and only the chimney remains today (2004). This photograph appears in chapter 13 of Mills' book entitled The story of Connecticut (editions published in 1943 and later).
