Description
Portrait of Edmund Newell, known as Major Newell, husband of Minnie Warren. He stands leaning against a table. He wears a suit and tie, and his hair is slicked back. Photographs like this one were often sold as a part of exhibitions, and in the case of performers whose claim to fame was related to their physical appearance or a developmental disability, the staging in photographs helped to emphasize their differences. This was accomplished by consciously manipulating clothing, props, the backdrop, and all other elements of the photograph in order to draw attention to their particular traits. The question of who was responsible for the staging, be it photographer, manager, or performer, varied greatly. Edmund Newell ( July 27, 1857-December 23, 1915), known as Major Newell, was an entertainer during the 1800s who gained fame thanks to promotion by P.T. Barnum. Newell, who was born in Chicago, worked as one of the many little people associated with Barnum, and went so far as to marry fellow little person and Barnum performer, Minnie Warren. The two had a child together, but both Minnie and the baby died on May 23, 1878. Newell lived with his brother and sister in law for a while before moving to England, re-marrying, and having two children. Newell died on December 23, 1915. A.K. Drury, photographer, LeRoy NY. Measures 4.25 by 6.5 inches.
