This issue of Contact from September, 1976 features an article welcoming new black students to UConn and an open letter by Candido Lebron, director of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center. Also included are reflections on America’s Bicentennial, an article about the Committee Against Racism, and a piece on the issue of racial segregation in schools. There is an article on UConn’s Summer Program; poetry by Fatima Cortez El-Mohammed, Wesley Dick, and Sheila Harris; and a review of the film, “The River Niger.” This issue also contains news on the San Quentin Six murder trial, an article about advertising agencies charged with racism, as well as a report on the July 4th march on Philadelphia organized by the Rich Off Our Backs. In international news, there is an article detailing the refusal of South African officials to release black juveniles arrested during a riot.
