Description
Partial side view of two-toned wooden bridge with rectangular windows high above a rocky, mostly dry, river bed. Its stone abutment and concrete central pier are further strengthened by wooden support beams. Bull's Bridge was built over the Housatonic River between Kent and Gaylordsville in 1842 at a cost of $3000. Named after Jacob Bull who built the first bridge at this site during the Revolutionary War, this 109-foot covered bridge lies 80 feet above the river bed. When the main dam of the Connecticut Light and Power Company was built in 1901-03, the bridge was raised 20 feet to be clear of the water. This photograph shows the supports applied to the bridge at that time. This one lane bridge on Bulls Bridge Road in Bulls Bridge just off U.S. Route 7 is still in use today (2003).
