Description
Early Archaic chert bifurcate-base projectile points from the Congomond Lakes, Suffield, Connecticut. 3353 on the left is manufactured from Normanskill Chert from eastern New York, whole 4715 on the right is manufactured from Onondaga chert from central or western New York. It is typical of bifurcate points found in Connecticut that they are manufactured from non-local raw materials, suggesting that the makers of these tools were not yet permanently settled in the state, or that they maintained very wide annual territorial ranges. Bifurcate points such as these are associated with radiocarbon dates from about 8500 - 8000 years ago. Calibration of these dates brings the associated time range to about 9500 - 9000 years ago. There are 15 bifurcate points in the Bull Collection, seven of which were found in Suffield, suggesting that this may have been an important focus of habitation during the Early Archaic period.
