Description
Stereoscope of Lindencroft. Stereoscopic photographs are paired photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope viewer to create a 3d image. The left and right images correspond to the left and right eye. The house is shown from an angle, with two horse-drawn carriages on the left and on the right. In the carriage on the left there is one driver, in the one on the right there are two figures, including a woman. On the porch of Lindencroft sit five women. The image has some green color applied to the lawn and to the landscaping around the house. It is unknown, due to a lack of a date, if the family here are the Barnums or the second owners, the Bassicks. Lindencroft was P.T. Barnum's second family home from about 1860-1869, built in the Italianate style by A.G. Tallmadge. Barnum lived there with his wife Charity and their youngest daughter, Pauline, about 1000 yards away from where Iranistan once stood. It was used by the family until Waldemere was completed. The Bassick family purchased Lindencroft; it was remodeled and updated over the years, but was eventually demolished to make way for Bassick High School in 1924. Unknown photographer, 1860-1869
