Description
This elegant piano came to the Barnum Museum with a tidbit of information that it was associated with Jenny Lind--but in what way, we do not know! Did she play it? As a singer, she had an accompanist with her on tour, but she may have played piano for her own pleasure. This piano was made sometime between 1929 and the mid-1830s, fifteen to twenty years before Lind's North American concert tour, so it was not made for that purpose. Perhaps it was in a home where she visited or stayed. The maker, William Geib, was part of a highly regarded family of piano and organ makers, first established in American in 1797. William was one of three somes who joined their father in the business, and later established other partnerships. William was known for making exceptionally fine square pianos, of which this is an example. Around 1836, he left New York and moved to Philadelphia, where he studied medicine and became a doctor. Who also composed music. It is plausible that he could have attended one of Jenny Lind's concerts.
