Description
Cast iron fieldpiece mounted on a gun carriage with wooden axle and iron and wood ox cart wheels. The cannon is chained to one of the pillars on the stone porch of the Winchester Historical Society. Mills has whited out the background directly behind the cannon.Cast at Salisbury, this Revolutionary War four-pounder cannon was buried at Danbury in 1777 to save it from the British. Brought from Danbury to Litchfield and then to Winchester in 1811, it would be buried and recovered at least three more times before being presented to the Winchester Historical Society in 1914. Mills wrote a one-page article on this cannon for the v. 7, no. 2 (fall-winter 1942) issue of The Lure of the Litchfield Hills.
