This issue of Contact from March, 1978 features an article on the oppressive conditions of gold mining in South Africa, a report on the upcoming peace negotiations between the United Nations and the South African government, as well as a piece about Zulu Chief Gatsha Buthelezi calling for the boycotting of South African elections. Also included is a tribute to musician Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a description of Steven Biko’s memorial, and an article highlighting the activism of Muhammad Ali. There is a letter to the editor from a UConn alumnus teaching in Africa with the Peace Corps, and an article calling for the recognition of Black women in American history, particularly Harriet Tubman. This issue also includes poetry by James Weldon Johnson and Crystal R. Hughes, a piece of short fiction by Sory Bambara, and job announcements.
