Description
Letter to James Bailey from P.T. Barnum, probably 1888 In this letter, Barnum tells Bailey his eldest grandson C. Barnum Seeley will look after his affairs after he is gone; he has 1/9 interest in his estate. Better for Bailey and Barnum that his successor be named Barnum. \He thinks everything of you and your management\ and he is the best representative of my estate that can be found. While Barnum lives he has nothing to say, only the more he gets posted about his affairs the better. Nobody but him and Barnum's Executors can have a word to say after Barnum is gone. \But I have no right to go this ten or fifteen years and I shall certainly stick to life and to you as long as I can. You suit me perfectly as a partner and as a friend.\ The 1888 date is pencilled in at top. P.T. Barnum wrote a large number of letters in his time, and as a public figure, received many in return. These manuscripts offer insight into his personal life via correspondence with friends and family, his business interests including the American Museum and the circus, and his personality. The various correspondents demonstrate how vast his social circle was, and the space he occupied as a public figure during his own lifetime.
