Description
Salt box house with outbuildings behind it. A well with a prominent sweep is at the right. The house is labeled "Shingled house," a "walnut" tree is in front. A field in the foreground, behind a "Virginia" rail fence, is labeled "mowing." This house served as General Israel Putnam's headquarters in the winter of 1779, during the Revolutionary War. It is situated in Reading, on the road between Norwalk and Danbury.
