Description
This illustration by British born architect and illustrator William Waud most likely came from the "Harper's Weekly" where Waud became a staff artist in 1864 during the Civil War. Here, Waud depicts a row of tents pitched amidst the trees along a dirt road or path. Men sit randomly in chairs smoking pipes, talking, or reading. A rider on a horse can be seen at the back left. This is a duplicate newspaper clipping pasted into Shadek's sketchbook. This version has officers' names handwritten onto the bottom of the clipping including Captain Hoyt, Army of the Potomac -- the man to whom Shadek dedicated his sketchbook.
