Description
New Haven Railroad Boston to New York train No.9, The Mayflower, passing Mott Haven in the Bronx, New York, in New York Central 3rd rail electric territory, a mere fourteen minutes from the bumping post at Grand Central Terminal. Photograph looks north from Park Avenue and East 153rd Street. The dual-mode FL-9 operates as diesel (diesel-electric), except when exercising New York Central (NYC) trackage rights into New York from Woodlawn where it operates on DC electric power picked up from the 3rd rail by a shoe on the locomotive truck. NYC's Mott Haven yard services primarily NYC passenger consists. On the NYC, New Haven No.9 was shown as Train Y9 on the train Dispatcher's sheet.
