"Chang the Chinese Giant" 2" by 3 1/2" card signed in Chinese characters. Variously known as Chang Woo Gow, Chang Yu Sing or Zhan Shi Chai, he toured the world as Chang the Chinese Giant. Approximately 8" long he began showing himself in London at the Egyptian Hall in Piccadilly in the 1860s, but was soon touring Europe. Well-educated and reportedly speaking up to ten languages, in 1880 Barnum signed him to appear in New York. An ad for Barnum's Greatest Show on Earth proclaimed him "The Huge Celestial Linguist, Scholar, Gentleman, The Unquestioned Goliath of the Century ." Chang died in 1893 at the age of 52. From P. T.
