G. Victor Grinnell is seated at an upright piano in the Grinnell home, Mystic. His right hand is on the keys; his left hand is on the ledge used to hold music. Piano is labeled "Emerson/ Boston/U.S.A./ Cabinet Grand". A framed landscape photograph or painting is partially visible hanging over the piano, whose top is draped with a fringed shawl. Family photos can be seen on the piano.

Title supplied by cataloger. Information from original envelope "G.V.G./ at /Piano" Setting is probably the parlor. George Victor Grinnell was from the local 19th-century shipbuilding family and grew up in Mystic. He was an accomplished musician who at one time had his own orchestra, and taught violin at Connecticut College. He was also a well-known local artist and active member of the Mystic Art Association.
