Description
This work explores the concept of political responsibility. Although there are many types of responsibility for which human beings are responsible, political responsibility entails its own meaning, scope, and requirements. Political responsibility is shared, concerns political phenomena, and demands ongoing efforts the results of which we may never see. It is discharged through action, which in turn requires virtues such as courage, a commitment to truth, and a regard for the wellbeing of others as human beings. Tumultuous times make political responsibility unavoidable, but often our responsibilities extend both before and after moments of crisis. This work, therefore, will also examine dialectical political responsibility, which orients human beings in a more radical way toward History and toward questions about the future. Dialectical political responsibility concerns philosophical anthropology, or transforming what it means to be a human being, as well as institutions. Multigenerational projects of revolution can effect such forms of social transformation and therefore instantiate dialectical political responsibility. They require learning from the long history of human struggles to achieve freedom and building on past revolutions. This also means dialectical political responsibility places us into a unique relationship with time where we navigate radical uncertainty and failure.
