This issue of Contact from November-December, 1977 features an account of a lecture given by poet Nikki Giovanni; an article on James Brown Jr., Assistant Director of Operation at the Student Union; and a description of the dinner and disco hosted by the Brothers of Sprague Hall. There is a reflection on the usefulness of the quota system in combating racism, an overview of the Bakke Case, and a discussion of the gains and challenges of black students at predominantly white universities. Also included is an article about the music group “Lovemen Limited,” an account of a recruitment conference introducing minority students to UConn’s law program, and profiles of UConn basketball players Jeff Carr and Michael Armstrong. Concerning international news, there is a report on the Uganda National Movement, a piece on Angola’s removal of corrupt officials, and an article on the conflicts over unification in Eritrea. Additionally, there is a piece on political dissidents in Sudan, as well as an examination of Nigeria’s increased political and economic power. The issue also contains African recipes and the Dove Counterbalance Intelligence Test. Included is poetry by Duke, Tamba, Eva Highsmith, Glenn Woods, and James Westberry.
