Description
This slate ulu (convex knife) is from the area of Gardner lake in Salem, Connecticut. Such knives are associated with the Middle and Late Archaic periods, between about 8,000 and 3,500 years ago. The knives are sometimes associated with fishing, but would have been useful for a variety of cutting and chopping tasks. In some cultures, this style of knife is part of a traditional woman's toolkit.
