Description
The New Era was originally a monthly newspaper printed in Chester in 1874 started by Francis Sheldon. It became a weekly publication in 1876. Upon moving its offices and equipment to Deep River in 1879, it became known specifically as 'Deep River New Era'. Its first location in Deep River was what is now, at the time of this writing (2019), Cumberland Farms. It moved again in 1918 to the location shown on the postcard, on Elm Street. While The New Era was purchased in 1977 by the Old Saybrook Pictorial and the building shown in the photograph no longer exists, the paper's records are available on microfilm at the Deep River Public Library.
