Description
Obelisk, surrounded by a semi-circular iron fence, commemorates the winter that General Israel Putnam and his troops camped here. A stack of cannonballs lie on the ground in front of the monument, surrounded by evergreens. A dirt road can be seen in the foreground. The inscriptions on the monument read “Putnam, McDougal, Poor, Parsons, Huntington” and “The Men of '76 who suffered here. To preserve forever the Memory, The State of Connecticut has erected this monument A.D. 1888.” This monument is visible from the main entrance of Putnam Memorial State Park, located on Route 58 in Redding. Erected the same year as the equestrian statue of General Putnam in Brooklyn, Conn., the obelisk is forty feet high, made of native granite, and crowned by a cannonball two and a half feet in diameter.
