Description
Large granite boulders on which visitors have etched their initials surround a cave opening. The plaque on the rock to the right of the entrance relates the story of Israel Putnam and the wolf. One night in December 1742, Israel Putnam entered this hillside den and shot the she-wolf that had been killing the sheep, lambs, goats, hens, and other domestic animals belonging to him and his neighbors. The Putnam Wolf Den is located in Mashamoquet Brook State Park which is on Route 44 in Pomfret.
